Make sure that at least two people on the boat know how to operate the craft. This will help avoid inconveniencing your passengers if something goes wrong or you are suddenly unable to drive the boat.
First and foremost, make sure you understand any port rules you may need to know when sailing out of a harbor. If you don't know your “port” from your “stern” or aren't sure exactly what the placement of buoys means, find out before you start your boat's engine.
Second, make safety your top priority for polite boat behavior. Always wear a life jacket on any watercraft, and never drive your boat or Jet Ski so close to others that you could risk hurting someone.
Third, driving a boat or personal watercraft is just like driving a car. Not only do you need to follow the rules mentioned above, but also you simply cannot drink and drive. If you know you're going to be drinking during your day or night on the water, find a designated driver and make sure he's the one who gets you safely back to port after your day is over.
Besides causing accidents, alcohol use can also lead to rude behavior, such as playing loud music or indulging in inappropriate displays. Whatever you do, don't leave your morals on shore when you take to the water, and if you must drink, do so responsibly.
Keep in Mind Customs Abroad
The best way for you to be a genteel traveler in a foreign land is to do what that old saying says: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” That means that as best as you can, you should adopt the local way of doing things over your regular habits. (See Chapter 13 on Etiquette from Around the World on specific behavior to avoid.) When in doubt, ask your hotel or resort's concierge for help in adapting to the local culture.
